GRIT. The Companion is a sonic extension of GRIT. A Work by Marcus Emel, a contemporary poetry collection rooted in memory, identity, intimacy, and survival.

About the Project

GRIT. The Companion translates poetry into sonic emotion. Instead of explaining the poems, it works through tone, rhythm, pacing, and voice, inviting listeners to feel the work before analyzing it.

The project functions as a living accompaniment to the original text. Each audio piece is designed as an interpretive echo, something to return to, sit with, and experience over time.

This work does not replace the book. It expands it, creating space for reflection, resonance, and personal meaning through sound.

Relationship to the Book

GRIT. The Companion is directly informed by GRIT. A Work by Marcus Emel, a multi part poetry collection exploring lineage, desire, faith, failure, and becoming.

While the book lives on the page, The Companion lives in sound. Together, they form a unified body of work where text and tone exist in conversation.

Use of AI

AI is used as a creative collaborator to support the translation of written poetry into sonic form. It assists with emotional continuity, pacing, and tonal exploration across the audio pieces.

The system does not author the work. All creative direction, voice, and intent originate with the poet. AI functions as a vessel that extends how the poetry can be felt, heard, and revisited while remaining grounded in human authorship.

GRIT. The Companion invites intentional listening. Not answers, but presence.
